Orny marshmuscles

Ethan is making tremendous strides with his language skills—he’s using complete sentences already!—but there are a few words that still give him trouble. My favorites: “marshmuscles” (marshmallows) and “orny” (orange). Maybe it’s just the proud dad in me, but I like his versions a lot better than the real ones.

This is how family lexicons and nicknames come to be! My family still uses toddler-isms from me, my sisters, cousins, etc. It’s very cool having our own code (as it were)–it’s a secret language just for us. Sixteen years from now, Ethan will be at his college dining hall and ask for a glass of orny juice out of habit, then get a pang for his own tribe. :) Viva la marshmuscles!
