As I get ready to jump back into my big writing endeaver for the year, The Witches of Coven Hill, I’ve been procrastinating working hard at refamiliarizing myself with some of the main characters that make up the story. Here’s a look at my notes about four of the key players.
Abby Shepherd – Abby has just turned 12 years old at the start of the novel. Her birthday falls on Halloween. She is an only child. Her best friend is her next door neighbor, Robby Griffith. Abby is a tomboy. She likes baseball and soccer and field hockey. She’s also very bookish. None of this sits terribly well with her mother, who’s always trying to get Abby to act more “like a girl.” Abby may or may not have a crush on Robby. She’s really not sure.
Robby Griffith – Robby, also 12 years old, is a nerd. He loves comic books, video games, scifi movies, math class, reptiles, and science experiments. He is best friends with Abby. He’s an only child. He and Abby are very much like siblings. They grew up together. Their families used to be very close as well, but since Robby’s mom died and Abby’s dad left the families have grown distant. Robby’s not really “aware” that Abby is a girl. Robby has a new stopmom, Tina, who is relatively new to town and is also the local animal control officer and veterinarian. Many of the animals she’s rescued and can’t bear to part with now inhabit the Griffith household. One of them is Perseus, an iguana that seems to think it’s a cat. It has befriended Robby.
Mikey “Moose” Madison - Moose is a year younger than Abby and Robby, but he towers over both of them by at least a head. He’s a massive boy and very kindhearted, but kind of innocent. He sees the best in everyone and almost never gets angry, which is good because he’s big enough that if he did get angry he could really hurt someone. Moose’s dad is Chief Madison, the head of the police department. Moose has three four-year-old triplet sisters: Jilly, Jenny, and Jessy. He’s their de facto babysitter. Moose’s most sincere desire is to be included in the Abby/Robby friendship. He sees himself as the third musketeer. They often forget about him altogether.
Amethyst “Amy” Brown – An orphan girl, Amy has bounced around from foster home to foster home. She can never stay in a foster home for long because wherever she goes, strange things seem to happen and before she knows it she’s being put back into state care. Like Abby, Amy was born on Halloween and has just turned twelve at the start of the novel. Amy’s a bit of a rebel. She has a chip on her shoulder earned by years in the foster system. She’s sarcastic and very suspicious. She’s also very, very clever.
Tommy “T-Rex” Rexman – An 8th grade bully, T-Rex is Robby’s nemesis at Coven Middle School. I haven’t thought too much about this character yet, I just love the nickname.
All this stuff is, er, copyright me. So no plagiarizing or anything, okay? Not that you’d want to at this point, but still.
